Dear Porsche Enthusiast,
A drive in the new 911 Targa 4 or 911 Targa 4S is a very special experience. For the first time, these impressive sportscars exclusively combine the unique Targa roof concept with the Porsche full-time all-wheel drive. Today we present the new models and the Targa roof concept in detail while also casting our memories back to 1956, when Porsche achieved a historic victory in the legendary “Targa Florio”. Other interesting topics are the latest successes in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring and a new travel offer from the Porsche Travel Club.

We hope you will enjoy this latest newsletter.

Enlightenment. The new 911 Targa 4 models.
The new 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S. Sportscars that refuse to fit into any category. The 911 Targa has now been around for over 40 years. Coupé or Cabriolet – it’s your choice: The electrically opening glass roof module is fully integrated into the body on the 911 Targa 4 and the 911 Targa 4S. The combination of the unique roof concept with full-time all-wheel drive lends the new 911 Targa 4 models their own special, unparalleled character. There’s barely another vehicle around that combines driving dynamics with functionality and elegance in such accomplished style.

The roof of the new 911 Targa 4 models.
The roof concept of the new 911 Targa 4 models provides for a very special driving experience. The glass sliding roof covers an area of almost 0.5 m² to offer an open view of the skies above which is normally the reserve of cabriolets. The glass sliding roof and the integrated blind are opened by means of a two-stage rocker switch in the centre console. During opening, the glass sliding roof is lowered slightly and then slides virtually silently to the rear and under the rear window in just 7 seconds, at any driving speed. An optimised, automatically raised wind deflector ensures only low levels of turbulence and wind noise inside the vehicle. The tinted glass absorbs the majority of the incoming ultraviolet rays. Even greater protection is provided by the electric blind made of partially transparent black fabric. When fully closed it keeps out strong sunlight and cold.

1956: The 1st victory for Porsche in the Targa Florio.
Porsche sportscars have notched up over 28,000 racing victories in the most diverse classes throughout the world. One of the most spectacular was without doubt the first overall victory in the famous Targa Florio in Sicily 50 years ago. Italian Umberto Magliolo completed the 720 kilometre course with its countless hills and bends in his Porsche 550 A Spyder without a change of driver, only pulling into the pits to refuel. Even prior to this overall victory, the Targa Florio was closely associated with the name Porsche: Back in 1922, the small Austro-Daimler car by the name of “Sascha”
– designed by Ferdinand Porsche – achieved a victory in its class in the Targa Florio. The victory in 1956 nevertheless marked the beginning of a unique success story for Porsche. In the following 17 years, Porsche sportscars won the Targa Florio a further 10 times. No other car manufacturer has equalled this record. The model name of the 911 Targa is a hommage to this famous race.

Overall victory in the 24-hour race at the Nürburging.
A private 911 GT3 belonging to the Bonn-based Manthey Racing Team has won the 24-hour race on the Nürburging with a lead of one lap. The four-man team comprising works drivers Timo Bernhard, Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockenfeller and former DTM driver Marcel Tiemann began the race on the 25.4 kilometre circuit from the pole position. After several changes of leader at the beginning, the Porsche Customer Team held on to the lead until the end of the race after 151 laps. In so doing, Olaf Manthey’s team set a new distance record. In all, seven Porsche Customer Teams were among the ten best contenders in the overall class. Porsche Customer Teams also put in an impressive performance at the 74th 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing in 2nd and 4th places in the GT2 category for near-series racecars.
